Email Security – Protecting your Business from Email Threats

Email Security – Protecting your Business from Email Threats 600 400 Timewade

Businesses cannot function without email and despite security precautions, emails still pose a threat for your business and these threats continue to evolve and are becoming smarter.

When it comes to who is targeted, everybody in your business is at risk and a potential target. Spam and phishing messages are continuing to enter our inboxes and all it takes is for one employee to be tricked by a convincing email message putting your company’s data at risk, with the loss of data or even ransomware being the consequence.

Ransomware and Spear Phishing are considered to be newer threats and more popular with cyber criminals as they get paid quicker rather than waiting for a buyer for the stolen information on the dark web.

Whilst ‘Phishing’ emails are malicious emails designed to trick the recipient into clicking on a malicious attachment or direct them to website where they are then asked to update personal information, such as a password or bank account details. ‘Spear Phishing‘ is a more personalised attack, usually targeted to an individual, business or organisation with the aim of stealing data for malicious purposes.

Ransomware is malicious software that can prevent users from accessing their data or computer, by locking access to their keyboard or encrypting files until a ransom is paid. There are various forms and strains of ransomware and these are unlikely to subside in the near future.

How can you protect your business from email threats?

It’s important that you establish a multi-layered approach with your email security and this starts with a range of protection tools including anti-virus and advanced threat solutions to protect from viruses, malware and ransomware.

To ensure business continuity, and to protect your data, email backup solutions should be in place to ensure your emails are regularly backed up. Email backup tools can make this task fully automatic and more reliable so that a lot of time and effort is saved.

Email archiving, there is a difference between email backup and archiving. Whilst archiving can de-clutter inboxes it also means that every email, together with its attachments remains available and searchable within the archive. Archiving can form part of your back up plan and can save valuable time and resource.

Remember your employees are a risk and therefore education is fundamental to ensure your employees are trained in IT Security so they become aware of the types of threats and how to identify malicious emails.
